Research Interests
Late Antiquity, Medieval and Byzantine Studies, Manuscripts
Dr. Kuper’s research focuses on Latin, Greek, and sometimes Syriac texts and their manuscript traditions in Late Antiquity through the Middle Ages. A central interest in recent years has been the Christian cult of the saints and the rich corpus of hagiographic literature. His critical edition, commentary, and translation of the Menologion of Basil II, a brilliantly illuminated Byzantine calendar of the saints, will be published by Harvard University Press in 2025.
Before arriving at the University of Tennessee, he was a member of the ERC-funded project, Priscian’s Ars Grammatica in European Scriptoria (PAGES), hosted at Sapienza Università di Roma. Prior to that, he spent two years as the NEH/SCS Postdoctoral Fellow in Latin Lexicography at the Thesaurus Linguae Latinae in Munich. He has also taught at Bryn Mawr College, Gettysburg College, and Haverford College.
